1916 Proclamation Day

Yesterday we had a ceremony to commemorate the leaders who sacrificed their lives for us. We put up the tricolour and two soldiers called Sergeant Kieran Crawford and Private Fintan Gallagher raised it. Then a few people from our class read and Ben was handing over the flag to the soldiers. I read out The Proclamation and Sophie from Senior Infants read the ending. It was great. On Easter Weekend it will be 100 years since it happened. We sang 2 songs ‘Óró sé do Bheath Bhaile’ and ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’. The singing was loud. Before the ceremony the soldiers came up for 5 minutes so we could ask them some questions like what guns they used etc. Yesterday was brilliant it was really fun!

Yesterday at 12:00, the whole school gathered in the car park to remember the people who sacrificed their lives for Ireland’s freedom. Two soldiers came to our school to raise our flag. Their names were Sergeant Kieran Crawford and Private Fintan Gallagher. Ben presented the flag to the Soldiers. After they raised the flag the choir and all of the students sang ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’.

As soon as the song finished the children who were reading the “Proclamation for a New Generation” got ready to read.

I read first and then Ryan, Demi, Séimí, Katelyn, David, Orla and Sophie from Senior Infants. Then the whole school sang ‘Oró sé do Bheatha bhaile’. Ms Foxe said a few words and everyone went back inside.

We played outside because it was sunny and then we had a party. My favourite part was when I got to do the reading. I learned that Soldiers had to be very neat and they got all their orders in Irish. It was really cool.
